About Delhi

Delhi is the bustling capital of India with 25 million people, home to a diverse mix of people from different parts of India. It has been invaded, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly in medieval times, which means today city actually encompasses a cluster of many former capitals! One of the city most popular tourist destinations, the 17th century, brilliant hued sandstone Red Fort, was the ruling palace of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who also built the majestic mausoleum known as the Taj Mahal, in Agra. Delhi itself contains another awe-inspiring mausoleum commissioned by a bereaved royal. In 1562, Hamida Banu Begum built Humayun tomb, in honour of her late husband, the Mughal Emperor Humayun. This magnificent structure was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. The beautiful Persian-designed, pure white marble dome, provides a stunning contrast to the rest of the red sandstone building, which features detailing in white and black marble and yellow sandstone.
